How Long Does A Clutch Last?
Clutches are no different than most other parts in your vehicle in that they wear out. Quite often it is not unusual for Chip's Transmissions to have to replace a clutch prior to the end of its lifespan. This is simply because clutches encounter a certain amount of wear and tear during normal driving circumstances. It is important to understand that determining how long a clutch will last is similar to solving a complicated equation with numerous variables. Some clutches can last well beyond 100,000 miles while other clutches will wear out in under 30,000 miles. The longevity of a clutch can be dependent on how carefully the clutch is used during driving. Other factors affecting how long a cluch will last can include how hot of a climate the car is driven in as well as the type of vehicle the clutch is in. In hot climates the transmission fluid will typically run hotter and as a result can burn out parts more quickly. To get the most life out of your clutch and avoid a clutch replacement Chip's Transmissions suggests not using the clutch when not needed. When stopped at a traffic light for example it is best not to use the clutch to make the vehicle stand still. Rather take the car out of gear and use the brake pedal to let the transmission rest in neutral. This provides the clutch with the chance to rest instead of keeping pressure on it. Even more important than the previous suggestion, Chip's Transmissions suggests not using the clutch pedal as a means to control the vehicle's speed.
It is a pleasure to deal with a locally owned shop that will not take advantage of you and even as skeptical as I am with repair shops, I feel I was well taken care of and would return again.
John Jeffries of Maryville Tennessee
"I recently returned back to East TN after serving in the military for 23 years. Unfortunately my truck transmission did not like the drive from Jacksonville Fla to Knoxville, and required repair work. I was skeptical and researched the local shops via online and from other repair shops in the area. All pointed in the direction of "Chips Transmission". So I called and spoke to Phil, and brought my truck in for an estimate. Ended up needing a rebuild. After some recommendations from Phil, we decided on a plan for my needs. They really took the time to work with me and my schedule and I couldn’t be happier. I highly recommend them for great customer service, and good camaraderie, as Chip and his other son both served in the military. GO NAVY! It is a pleasure to deal with a locally owned shop that will not take advantage of you and even as skeptical as I am with repair shops, I feel I was well taken care of and would return again. I would recommend them to anyone. Thanks, I sure appreciate it. "
I brought my knitting and a good book and enjoyed conversation with the office manager and one of the customers. It was a good experience. I definitely recommend Chips.
Virginia Simpson of Seymour Tennessee
"The people who work at Chips are very competent and friendly. They answered all my questions so that I could understand what work was being done. The waiting area is cozy and comfortable. On my latest visit to their shop I had to wait 5 1/2 hours before the work was done. That was not a surprise since that is simply how long that job takes. I brought my knitting and a good book and enjoyed conversation with the office manager and one of the customers. It was a good experience. I definitely recommend Chips. "
Next time I'm going to Chip's Transmissions firs!
Don Watson of Sevierville Tennessee
"On December 12, 2006, I was Christmas shopping in Sevierville and parked at one of the many outlets. Upon returning to my vehicle, I started the engine and placed the vehicle in reverse. As I gently accelerated to back out of the parking space, the vehicle did not respond as the transmission seemed to slip. The transmission suddenly caught and jerked into gear. I tried forward, reverse, and everything worked perfectly. However, my 2003 Ford Explorer does not have a stick to check the level, you must place the vehicle on a lift at a service station. I wanted to make sure the fluid levels was correct to prevent any future problems, so I visited several locations and asked to have the fluid level checked. One location told me they would not check the fluid, but they would hook me up for a diagnostic test for a substantial fee. I explained that the transmission was working fine, and I just wanted to check the fluid as a precaution. They still refused. The other locations were busy or told me they couldn't perform the service check on my transmission. Thinking I was going to have to drive to Knoxville or similar distance, I thought of Chip's Transmission repair shop in Sevierville. I went there and talked to Mr. Phil Sims. They had numerous vehicles being repaired, but Mr. Sims worked me into their schedule in a timely manner. They completed the check on my transmission, and did so at a very fair price. I mistakenly thought of a transmission shop as a location for repairs only. However, they perform repairs and many other functions as well. Many thanks to you Phil, for taking time out of your busy schedule to perform a small job for me. Next time I'm going to Chip's Transmissions first!"
Thanks for the great deal on a great transmission job!
Bob Zachar of Bartlett Tennessee
"You know, when you have to buy a transmission 400 miles from home, you're really "under the gun", because you know if a problem develops you sure aren't able to take it back easily. Fortunately for us, such a problem never arose. I don't think it's an accident that your work help up like it has. Quality is not an accident, it's a process that reflects directly on the person at the helm. Unfortunately for you, the distance between us prevents my bragging about the service I got to result in referred customers for you. Believe this; I have told the story about the broken transmission in the Smoky Mountains to a lot of people in Memphis. It usually comes up when someone remarks, "are you still driving that old Chevrolet"? "How many miles on it"? Of course when I tell them, "enough to get to the moon", they want to know if it's the original engine and transmission. On the issue of quality, let me share a quote from FedEx's Fred Smith. He was speaking to a large group of employees and basically said, "Satisfying the customer in this competitive world is not enough, we must DELIGHT them. Because although satisfied customers will probably stay loyal (emphasize probably), delighted customers multiply". Delighting customers means going above and beyond the industry norms, but the payback means the difference between survival and growth or demise. So much for rambling. I'm sure I speak for numerous customers who are also "delighted", but never took the time to say thanks. You know how it is, we're all so busy that we only tend to speak when it's something to complain about. Thanks for the great deal on a great transmission job!"
You can be sure if we are in Tennessee again we will stop and say hello. Thanks again!
Russ Milbrodt of Massillon Ohio
"Our car is running great. No problems. Russ has checked the fluid level a couple of times - no leaking. I wanted to again thank you all for being so friendly and helpful. You did not have to do the extras - finding us a hotel room and a rental car. These extras plus your sympathetic and understanding attitude will always bring you repeat customers and a reputation to be proud of. You made a stressful situation a lot easier to deal with. You can be sure if we are in Tennessee again we will stop and say hello. Thanks again!"
Thanks for your excellent service, being so professional, so kind and so courteous.

Bob Smiddy of Knoxville Tennessee
"I would like to take the opportunity to recommend Chip's Transmissions for your service needs. Chip is a straight forward, down to earth, honest, and reliable individual and he stands behind is work. I only wish I knew Chip long ago! Last year my truck transmission broke and I had my truck towed into the local transmission shop in middel Tennessee. one wee and $2,000 later I was on the road again, but nothing ever felt right. One day when I was out making a pick up for my store, it started to slip again, I had my truck towed in to Chip's Transmissions, and boy was i luck this time. After the major repairs I was back on the road again. I can really feel my gears shifting. You did a great job! you can trust Chip and you will be pleased with your repairs."
I would not recommend any other transmission shop other than Chip's Transmissions.
Brenda Painter of Sevierville Tennessee
"My wife and I own a 17 year old truck that has a very rare transmission. After looking for nearly a year for a replacement we called Chip's as a last resort. As it turned out we should have called them first. They knew exactly what we were up against and had a solution in a short time. They were nearly 1/2 the price of what the dealership wanted or any other shop we checked. They also had the best warranty. We have been very pleased with the results. With one week left on the warranty the transmission began to act up a bit and again we took it to Chip's. After a short road trip they could find nothing wrong yet they knew I was not happy with it's performance. They had me to leave it overnight so they could check it again. It turned out to be going bad so again they did a complete rebuild with another warranty and did not cost us one penny. The truck runs like new again! Every time we have gone down to their shop they have made us feel as if we were important to them. Prompt service, very courteous and informative. As a retired ASE certified Master Mechanic, Chip has earned my respect and all of my family's business from now on. I would not recommend any other transmission shop other than Chip's Transmissions. "
