How Can I Tell If I Need New Shocks For My Vehicle?
When trying to determine if our customers in the greater Sevierville area need new shocks, our automotive shock specialists tell them that if possible follow these four simple steps:
- Position one's self to a corner of the vehicle and directly above a wheel.
- With firm gestures, push down on the body of the vehicle and bounce the vehicle up and down 3 to 4 times
- When releasing the vehicle observe the reaction. When the bouncing ceases within one rise and fall after stopping the shocks are working properly. When the vehicle continues to bounce repeatedly the shocks are more than likely worn.
- Chip's Transmissions suggests that the shocks be inspected with a flashlight. The wheels may need to be turned to provide access when kneeled down to see them. Using the flashlight one should inspect the shocks to see if liquid is present. If liquid is present it may indicate that hydraulic fluid is leaking through faulty seals and most likely needs to be replaced.
I could not believe I finally found a transmission shop that was honest!
Tracy Highsmith of Knoxville Tennessee
"I could not believe I finally found a transmission shop that was honest! I will return to Chip's for anything transmission related with my truck again & again. They are very well worth the drive from Knoxville. Thanks Chip's for doing it right the 1st time!"
It is a pleasure to deal with a locally owned shop that will not take advantage of you and even as skeptical as I am with repair shops, I feel I was well taken care of and would return again.
John Jeffries of Maryville Tennessee
"I recently returned back to East TN after serving in the military for 23 years. Unfortunately my truck transmission did not like the drive from Jacksonville Fla to Knoxville, and required repair work. I was skeptical and researched the local shops via online and from other repair shops in the area. All pointed in the direction of "Chips Transmission". So I called and spoke to Phil, and brought my truck in for an estimate. Ended up needing a rebuild. After some recommendations from Phil, we decided on a plan for my needs. They really took the time to work with me and my schedule and I couldn’t be happier. I highly recommend them for great customer service, and good camaraderie, as Chip and his other son both served in the military. GO NAVY! It is a pleasure to deal with a locally owned shop that will not take advantage of you and even as skeptical as I am with repair shops, I feel I was well taken care of and would return again. I would recommend them to anyone. Thanks, I sure appreciate it. "
Thanks for the great deal on a great transmission job!
Bob Zachar of Bartlett Tennessee
"You know, when you have to buy a transmission 400 miles from home, you're really "under the gun", because you know if a problem develops you sure aren't able to take it back easily. Fortunately for us, such a problem never arose. I don't think it's an accident that your work help up like it has. Quality is not an accident, it's a process that reflects directly on the person at the helm. Unfortunately for you, the distance between us prevents my bragging about the service I got to result in referred customers for you. Believe this; I have told the story about the broken transmission in the Smoky Mountains to a lot of people in Memphis. It usually comes up when someone remarks, "are you still driving that old Chevrolet"? "How many miles on it"? Of course when I tell them, "enough to get to the moon", they want to know if it's the original engine and transmission. On the issue of quality, let me share a quote from FedEx's Fred Smith. He was speaking to a large group of employees and basically said, "Satisfying the customer in this competitive world is not enough, we must DELIGHT them. Because although satisfied customers will probably stay loyal (emphasize probably), delighted customers multiply". Delighting customers means going above and beyond the industry norms, but the payback means the difference between survival and growth or demise. So much for rambling. I'm sure I speak for numerous customers who are also "delighted", but never took the time to say thanks. You know how it is, we're all so busy that we only tend to speak when it's something to complain about. Thanks for the great deal on a great transmission job!"
Hands down, grade A customer service!
Jeremie Cutter of Vevay Indiana
"Great service! They took the time to listen to what my plans were for the truck and explained what they were going to do and answered all of my questions. I ended up having a problem with the tranny which was no fault of either party and there were no questions asked as to why ... it was just "bring it in and we'll get it fixed". It was fixed fast, too. A day and a half and I was going again. Very good for bringing it in just after noon and getting it back the next evening. Every time I called, someone has always answered or gotten back to me fast (within 1/2 hour) and I probably called 15+ times - from setting up an appointment to having questions to minor problems to getting it picked up. Hands down, grade A customer service! Thank you ALL!"
Thanks for your excellent service, being so professional, so kind and so courteous.
Rockey Poeta of Sevierville Tennessee

I would not recommend any other transmission shop other than Chip's Transmissions.
Brenda Painter of Sevierville Tennessee
"My wife and I own a 17 year old truck that has a very rare transmission. After looking for nearly a year for a replacement we called Chip's as a last resort. As it turned out we should have called them first. They knew exactly what we were up against and had a solution in a short time. They were nearly 1/2 the price of what the dealership wanted or any other shop we checked. They also had the best warranty. We have been very pleased with the results. With one week left on the warranty the transmission began to act up a bit and again we took it to Chip's. After a short road trip they could find nothing wrong yet they knew I was not happy with it's performance. They had me to leave it overnight so they could check it again. It turned out to be going bad so again they did a complete rebuild with another warranty and did not cost us one penny. The truck runs like new again! Every time we have gone down to their shop they have made us feel as if we were important to them. Prompt service, very courteous and informative. As a retired ASE certified Master Mechanic, Chip has earned my respect and all of my family's business from now on. I would not recommend any other transmission shop other than Chip's Transmissions. "
Chip's technicians were highly trained folks. Thanks, Chip's for being there!
Gary Swartz of Sevierville Tennessee
"It was our first experience at Chip's. We called to check their prices and to see how soon we could have our RV checked and serviced. When we got done talking to them we felt better that our RV was getting in the next day for service. So it would be done prior to our trip to Tucson, Arizona. The RV was done ahead of time with needing only a routine service, since nothing was found during their inspection. Everyone there at Chip's was very friendly, like you were family. They answer all questions and told you all that was done on the RV. I have told my friends about Chip's and their excellent service and price. Speaking of price check what it will cost you to take it to your RV repair shop and then check Chip's you will be happy you called them. Chip's also had me done by the next day. RV center-two to three weeks to just get a date to bring it in. Chip's technicians were highly trained folks. Thanks, Chip's for being there!"
I will definitely be bringing my car back if/when I need anything else done. They are friendly and respectable.
Ashley Ray of Sevierville Tennessee
"I took my car here because I was having brake issues. I wasn't sure of the cause, but John was sure to call me with updates and ask questions. He was very straight forward and honest. I will definitely be bringing my car back if/when I need anything else done. They are friendly and respectable."
I will recommend you to anybody looking for a Transmission Specialist and you will continue to do my work in the future.
Joe Wilcox of Sevierville Tennessee
"Just a note to say thank you for the quick and dependable service you did on my wife's car. I was referred to you from a friend that also believes in you. I made the appointment to have my transmission filter changed and flushed before I went on a road trip back to Michigan to visit my family, you got me right in like you said you would do. You were good enough to take me back to work and pick me up when the job was done, this was a great service to me. You mentioned that you checked the tire pressure and belts and hoses which also helped put my mind at ease since I did not have the time to do it myself. You also mentioned something that I should keep an eye on about my transmission and when I got back to Michigan I followed up with a GM transmission specialist I had known for years and he agreed to what you had told me. I will recommend you to anybody looking for a Transmission Specialist and you will continue to do my work in the future. "
I can't say enough good things about the level of service and professionalism by ALL of the people at Chips who helped us out in a time of need, not once but twice in the same week!!

David Haas of St. Clair Shores Michigan
"While pulling our 10,000 pound 5th wheel from Michigan to the Smokey Mountains during the 2015 4th of July Holiday we experienced two different problems. The first was we lost first gear about 10 miles from our campground. I found Chips during a google search and used their online service schedule tool to schedule an appointment for Monday morning. Phil contacted me Saturday evening to notify me that I may not be the first appointment due to being closed so his employees could also enjoy the long Holiday weekend, but they would be able to help me as soon as possible Monday morning. Fifteen minutes after my arrival on Monday morning they had diagnosed the problem as a transducer, and begun working on the repair. An hour and a half later I was on my way! Our second problem happened while sight seeing in the Smokey Mountains National Park. The diesel engine in our truck just died it would not stay running more then 5 seconds at a time. I contacted Eric at Chips Transmission, he arranged a tow truck for us, and put me in contact with Terrell at Chips diesel repair. The tow truck arrived within 1 hour and had our truck to Chips prior to closing. The next day Terrell had diagnosed the problem as the fuel transfer pump, and had the repairs made by 11:00am! I can't say enough good things about the level of service and professionalism by ALL of the people at Chips who helped us out in a time of need, not once but twice in the same week!! Thank you, David Haas"
